Background Information

The buildings of the primary schools O.S.1 Meerzorg (Commewijne), O.S. Wonoredjo, and EBGS Wanhattie (both in Marowijne) were in urgent need of renovation. In consultation with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture, these schools were selected for renovation. The roofs, ceilings, doors, windows, and sanitary facilities are renewed. Electrical work and painting is also carried out.

Anita Gangaram, the head of O.S.1 Meerzorg, is very pleased with this initiative. “What touched me was a New Year’s wish from a student during the flag ceremony at the start of this new year. This student’s wish was to visit a nice school and have access to a clean toilet. Even in the rain, the children have to sit close together because of the leaks in the ceiling.”

Staatsolie is aware of its social responsibility and is committed to the well-being of the community. The company decided to invest the proceeds from the Suriname Energy Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) held in June 2022 into the community. This time, the investment was made in areas where the company does not operate. Through this project, Staatsolie contributes to a child-friendly learning environment that encourages young Surinamese to achieve good school performance.
